La Conge is an environmentally conscious campground in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez, in the Vendée region. Our commitment to protecting the environment and our eco-sustainable actions

La Conge Tri Ecology Campground

Because protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility, the campground has been committed to recycling for several years and encourages its guests to adopt these good habits in their daily lives:

  • 🟡 Yellow bin: for recyclable packaging.
  • 🟢 Green or gray trash can: for non-recyclable household waste.
  • 🟣 Glass recycling bin: for glass bottles and jars.
  • 📄 Paper recycling bin: for newspapers, magazines, and documents. At the office, we reuse paper printed on one side to make scratch paper or sticky notes!
  • 🔋 Battery bin: available at the front desk for disposing of your used batteries.
  • 🌱 Compost bin: installed in 2019, it’s for fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, and tea bags. Thanks to it, our little vegetable garden benefits from high-quality, natural compost!

And because nothing is lost—everything is transformed—our creative workshops give everyday materials a second life: paper rolls, pieces of wood, pinecones, last year’s brochures… Everything becomes an opportunity to create beautiful homemade decorations, in the spirit of our activities and events!

water management

At our eco-conscious campground in the Vendée, we also educate our guests about responsible water use, because water is a precious and limited resource! In partnership with Vendée Eau, we use posters, games, and outreach to remind guests of best practices for conserving water.

We installed a rainwater collection system to water our vegetable garden beds 🙂

But how can you reduce your water usage?

  • If I see a leak, I report it to the person in charge
  • No more than 4 minutes in the shower
  • I use a basin to wash the dishes
  • Don’t shower before going to the beach
  • I fill the washing machine before starting it
  • I turn off the water while brushing my teeth

Biodiversity in the Vendée

At the campground, we’ve set up insect hotels and birdhouses to promote the well-being and protection of the small animals around us—just like our mini-farm with goats and sheep!

The campground is located in a natural pine forest that we are committed to preserving for the well-being of the local flora and fauna. We take care to keep our pine forest intact and carry out any development in a way that avoids cutting down any trees. We also love to hear and watch the birds sing and see the squirrels scampering about (if we’re lucky ;).

When pruning trees, we then shred dead branches, old pinecones that have fallen to the ground—after strong winds, for example—and so on, to make a good natural mulch that we spread over our flower beds! We also use pinecones for natural decorations here and there 🙂

We also use the branches—left over from our annual pruning—and tree trunks to create natural decorations at the campground and to mark the boundaries of our campsites. Just like this year, we give pruned poplar branches a second life through our town’s community garden, using them to build fences, mark off vegetable garden plots, and more—all in keeping with the authentic spirit of our La Conge campground in the Vendée.

The Vegetable Garden at La Conge Campground in the Vendée

We encourage people to buy local and support short supply chains. Here, you can find a wide variety of local and regional products at the markets in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez and the surrounding areas. You can also buy directly from producers, such as vegetable farmers, oyster farmers, and others. And in the Vendée, we have great products 🙂
